How to Design High and Low (Budget Edition)
Whether working with a client on a commercial or residential property, everyone wants to know where to splurge and where to save.
Living Room (or Reception/Entry for Commercial Spaces)
Splurge: Invest in the couch or the largest seating area. This piece will receive the most use and foot traffic. Opt for a high-performance fabric and consider a custom piece if the budget permits. In our recent Brix project, we crafted a sectional to fit the space perfectly, focusing on every detail, right down to the height of the base and backrest.
Save: On accessories like trinkets and books, which can easily be thrifted.
Mix High and Low: With pillows. Use statement pillows, such as our Thread by Eden & Co. collection, and pair them with more neutral, budget-friendly options to achieve an upscale look while maintaining your budget.
Kitchen
Splurge: On hardware and fixtures. This might be controversial, but it's worth investing here.
Save: By skipping inlaid cabinets, which can save about 30% by opting for Euro style. You can still enhance the cabinet façade to give it a custom look with paint-grade materials instead of stain. Mixing and matching materials can also reduce costs.
Fireplace
Splurge: Install a gas fireplace at a minimum. Avoid electric options, as they tend to look less authentic and don't add value to your home.
Office
Splurge: On the reception desk, the first impression people get of your brand. Consider splurging on the CEO's office and the conference room, as these spaces are often client-facing and reflect your brand's image.
Hotel
Splurge: On the entryway, as it's the main experience guests will have upon entering.
Restaurants
Splurge: On built-in seating. A well-crafted bench encourages guests to stay longer, and the difference between bespoke and pre-made options is noticeable.
By strategically mixing high and low elements, you can achieve a sophisticated look without breaking the bank and being strategic on how you invest in your business.
